Earning your next Internship

Spending your first salary or saving it for the day, the internships are where we all start our journey. They give us our first job, our first impression of the industry, and our first earnings. So as many of us wonder how do I get my first Internship; how do I contact people in the industry to give me an opportunity; or how can I find a suitable job matching my interests? Well, the answer lies somewhere in this blog.
From bulky salaries to ample learning opportunities the industry has it all, you just need to know where and how to look for them. Finding your first job/internship might be difficult for you but if you have things ready on time you can list down a hundreds’ of them. Let’s begin.
So, the first step is to build an informative and appealing resume. A resume is the most important thing that you will need while applying for a job. It represents you and all your work to the recruiter and forms the basis of your first impression to the recruiters. Often, shortlisting of candidates is done on the basis of their resume or CV. There are hundreds’ of applicants for each job profile and for you to be shortlisted for the next rounds a good and informative resume is essential. Also, it is also preferred to prepare separate resume formats for different job profiles as in for example if you are aiming for management or HR posts, focus on your Position of Responsibility section and if you are aiming for say a technical post focus on your Project section. Now, once you have it ready it is time for you to know about various platforms where you can know about various opportunities. Well, you have –

1.    Websites like LinkdIn( https://www.linkedin.com/ ), Internshala( https://internshala.com/ ), InternThoery( https://www.interntheory.com/ ).

2.    Engineering students can also refer to the ‘Jobs’ section on various Coding platforms like HackerRank( https://www.hackerrank.com/jobs/search ), Techgig( https://www.techgig.com/jobs ),   HackerEarth( https://www.hackerearth.com/companies/hackerearth/jobs/  ).

3.    Apart from that, almost every company has a listed ‘Jobs’ or ‘Careers’ section on their official websites where candidates can apply directly for open posts at their company. There are regular updates on the job openings in these sections.

4. If you are also looking for training/internship opportunities in government/ government-aided/PSUs’ based sector then there are various options available. Depending on the city you’re based in you can contact various public/govt. organisations for training at their centres. But few facts while applying for such internships –

•    The working jobs here may include paid internships/unpaid internships/unpaid training/training with initial fees deposit/contract based jobs. An institution may provide one or more options from this list so carefully examine the options available specific to your specialisation.

•    The application process pertaining to different organisations can differ. Some institutions offer only online modes, some are partially online-partially offline, and others may be completely offline.

•    For the online process, you need to keep a constant eye on the organisations’ website. Look for the dates and application procedure of previous year applications. The period of application usually varies from 2-3 weeks. Try to submit your application on time. You can also reach out to previous interns/trainees at their organisations.

•    For the offline procedure, you may try contacting the HR cell of the respective organisation. If you are acquaintance with any fellow working there it may be a great help. As in online mode, reaching to previous interns/trainees might be more helpful.

5. Now, there are other numerous opportunities that you may access. These are research internships that are offered by various research organisations and academic institutions. These may be available in the form of scholarships or you may need to apply in person to the concerned mentor. Sometimes these are paid or else you may need to pay for it. For those interested in research and development these might be just better than others. 7. Craving for more information? Well, there is another here. Freelancing! If you have the talent to sell your work and skills to develop a project on your own you may work as a freelancer. Just go through your contact list or build a website/blog to earn the very first opportunity.

Try to apply through these platforms to gain insight into how things work. Even if you are not shortlisted most of the companies offer feedback/tips for improvement for the candidates' profile which can be really helpful. While applying for any of the jobs remember to maintain a healthy professional relationship with the recruiter. While doing written communication, keep your writings formal and add salutations. When communicating directly keep in mind the use of proper tone, physical appearances and body language.
